Interfaces between communication, education and health: a scoping review protocol

Introduction

The interfaces between the fields of communication, education and health have been indicated by international institutions such as the WHO and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. However, hegemonic scientific practices supersede dialogue between the three fields, isolating their practices. This fragmenting tendency is observed in scientific literature, which has created gaps in the dialogue and articulation between communication, education and health. Although health promotion requires both communicative and educational practices, the epistemological, historical, political, cultural and socioeconomic aspects have also engendered tensions between the fields. Communication is often seen as a mere instrument for other practices, rather than a phenomenon that (re)produces meanings and power dynamics. In opposing the reductionist and instrumentalising perspectives of knowledge fields, the primary objective of the scoping review is to map the scientific evidence on the interfaces between communication and education in health to indicate a conceptual framework that articulates communication and education practices within the context of health.

Methods and analysis

A transdisciplinary team developed this protocol based on the 2024 Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis. The procedures required to conduct the review were guided by the frameworks proposed by Arksey and O'Malley, Levac et al and Peters et al. The study eligibility criteria were established based on the Problem, Concept and Context outlined in the research questions. Primary and secondary studies will be retrieved from nine sources, covering both conventional and grey literature. These sources include Embase, ERIC, LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, and the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. A categorised form will be used for data collection and subsequent analysis. The reporting of the review findings will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews.

Ethics and dissemination

The nature of the research and the use of secondary data sources do not require informed consent forms or approval from ethics committees in Brazil. The scientific findings from the review will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, academic conferences and other scientific communication channels.

Technologies in Intensive Care Therapy and the Obstacles in Nursing Practice: Systematic Review

ABSTRACT

Aim

To identify obstacles faced by nurses when using health technologies in Intensive Care Units (ICUs).

Design

Systematic review following PRISMA and registered in PROSPERO.

Methods

Six databases were searched. Two reviewers independently screened studies and appraised methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. Data were synthesized narratively.

Results

Eight studies met eligibility criteria. Barriers clustered around limited training and technical competence, shorter professional experience, increased workload with multiple devices, organizational culture, and reduced direct patient contact, which may undermine patient-centered care. Heterogeneity of study designs precluded meta-analysis.

Conclusions

Obstacles to technology use in ICUs arise from individual and organizational factors. Addressing these barriers requires structured education, mentoring for novice nurses, workload management, and supportive policies that integrate technology without displacing bedside care.

Linking Evidence to Action

Nursing leaders and educators should implement ongoing, ICU-specific technology training and mentoring. Managers and policymakers must ensure adequate staffing and promote Health Technology Assessment to align device implementation with clinical needs, safeguarding patient safety and the human dimensions of care.

Nurses' Perceptions of Fundamental Care in Preventing Venous Ulcer Recurrence: A Qualitative Focus Group Study

ABSTRACT

Venous ulcers are the most prevalent among those affecting the lower limbs, with high economic and quality of life impact. Due to the chronicity of venous disease, healing and recurrence cycles are common. Patient adherence to self-care activities to prevent recurrence is very low, so it is crucial to reflect on nurses' experiences with this phenomenon. A qualitative and descriptive study was developed to analyse nurses' perceptions about preventing venous ulcer recurrence. According to the inclusion criteria, focus groups with nurses were implemented. Three focus groups were conducted through the Colibri platform, ensuring all ethical assumptions. Content analysis was performed according to thematic criteria, using the WebQda software. Three main themes emerged: integration of care, context of care, and relationship. The participants emphasised the importance of holistic assessment and the establishment of common goals to promote adherence to fundamental recurrence prevention care. Understanding and respecting individual values, empathy and active listening, considering the established relationship, anticipating the person's needs, and trust are essential to overcoming barriers to implementing recurrence prevention care and to its continuity. Taking these aspects into consideration implies that the professional is part of the process of preventing the recurrence of venous ulcers.

Implementation strategies by leaders and health professionals to improve the safety climate in the operating room: a scoping review

Objectives

This scoping review aims to map evidence or literature on improvement strategies used by health leaders and professionals to strengthen the safety climate in the operating room.

Design

A scoping review was performed on the basis of the method proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute and applied to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) extension.

Data sources

16 academic and grey literature data sources were searched using search terms on 17 January 2025, namely, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online via Pubmed, Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences via the Virtual Health Library, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, WorldCat, Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, Brazilian Association of Surgical Center Nurses, Center for Material and Sterilization and Anesthetic Recovery, Association of Portuguese Operating Room Nurses, Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, WHO and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Eligibility

Study selection, data extraction and synthesis were based on the following eligibility criteria based on the acronym PCC (participants, concept, context): participants (health leaders and professionals), concept (strategies to improve the safety climate) and context (operating room). This scoping review considered studies published from 2009 onwards.

Data extraction

Information on the objective, method and findings addressing improvement strategies employed to strengthen the safety climate in the surgical centre was retrieved. The findings are presented in tables and in a qualitative thematic summary.

Results

A total of 26 studies were analysed, published between 2009 and 2024, with the USA as the country of origin of the publications with the highest number (11 studies). As for the methodological approach, intervention and quasi-experimental studies stand out. When the studies in this review were mapped, strategies that strengthened the safety climate in the operating room were identified and grouped into two main axes that are interrelated: communication tools and training programmes.

Conclusion

It is evident that the implementation of tools that promote communication and training programmes enhances safe surgical care, as they contribute substantially to the domains of the safety culture. The use of communication protocols in the operating room is recommended as a perioperative safety tool.

Co‐Designing and Evaluating a Digital Competencies Toolkit for Nursing Students

ABSTRACT

Aim

To offer a student-focused critical evaluation of the content and use of a digital competencies discipline-specific toolkit that was co-designed with students, offering ideas for training and development across several digital skills areas, such as digital creation, research, communication, innovation, and wellbeing.

Design

A cross-sectional empirical study.

Methods

The toolkit was evaluated based on clarity, level of comprehension, accessibility, perceived relevance, and future implementation through a survey, which collected quantitative and qualitative data from 339 undergraduate nursing students in a single school and university in Scotland. Original research data were collected in June 2023.

Results

Students evaluated the toolkit positively for its clarity, comprehensive nature, and practical resources, but suggested improvements for neurodivergent learners. Most students recommended implementing the toolkit early in their course and emphasised its benefits in continuous use. The toolkit was found to be relevant for practice placements and career development. Despite study workload concerns, students were positive about upskilling, highlighting the utility of the toolkit.

Conclusion

Digital literacy is essential as healthcare increasingly relies on digital tools, behaviours and processes. This study employed co-design strategies, supporting students to act as co-producers, change agents, and partners in learning.

Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care

The study highlights the need for continuous education in digital skills with suggestions for incorporating advanced skills for future practice, such as data analytics and artificial intelligence, and discusses the value of digital skills development in higher education to enhance student learning and future practice.

Impact

The research offers insights of international relevance into the development of a digital competencies toolkit that proposes nursing-specific educational digital skills interventions. The work fosters inclusivity, continuous digital skills improvement, and professional readiness.

Putting the patient at the centre: a call for research involvement of nurses, midwives and allied health professionals working in genomics

Introduction

We report the collaborative views of a group of nurses, midwives and allied health professionals (NMAHPs) in the UK who have a genomics research remit or interest. Our group includes genetic counsellors under this diverse category of healthcare workers.

This group came together as part of the National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) Genomics Research National Specialty Group. After responding to a survey to elicit the views of NMAHPs working in genomics, some of the original 45 respondents, along with others who learnt of the project by word of mouth, have worked together to produce this article.

Objective

The paper aims to set out in clear terms the value of NMAHPs to research that supports the patient-centred implementation of genomics in the National Health Service (NHS).

Key argument

We discuss four potential areas where NMAHPs, in particular, can contribute to the research. These are patient perspectives and epistemic justice, psychosocial impacts, the familial nature of genomics and equity. We argue that this group (NMAHPs) represents a potentially underused resource for the NHS as it seeks to ensure that advances in genomics are translated into patient benefit.

Conclusions

We propose that NMAHPs, with our research expertise, are well placed to shape and deliver a research agenda that explores models of patient-centred care in the genomics era. We call for increased funding for NMAHP research roles and funding opportunities to deliver this fundamental work.

Cutaneous non-volar melanoma dermoscopy and histopathology correlation: a systematic review protocol

Introduction

Dermoscopy has a proved validity in the diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma, which is one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer. Although some studies have demonstrated a relationship between specific dermoscopic and pathologic melanoma features, there is no solid evidence allowing reliable conclusions. This study will evaluate the evidence regarding this association.

Methods and analysis

Observational studies eligible for our systematic review will enrol adults with histological cutaneous non-volar melanoma diagnosis and with dermoscopy image analysis. We will search the following databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, MEDLINE and Cochrane Library. We will not impose any language or date restrictions. Outcomes of interest include the association of at least one of the melanoma dermoscopy features (irregular pigmentation, blue-white veil, atypical network, multicomponent pattern, atypical dots and/or globules, regression, peripheral tan structureless area, negative network, shiny white structures, atypical vessels and streaks/pseudopods), with melanoma Breslow index or other histopathology characteristics (melanoma subtype, mitotic index and presence of ulceration). Two reviewers will independently screen and search results, extract data from eligible studies and assess risk of bias. The evidence derived by this study will elucidate the possible link between melanoma dermoscopy and histopathology. If we could predict melanoma thickness based on dermoscopy, we would be able to anticipate melanoma treatment with impact on survival.

Ethics and dissemination

Ethical approval is not required because this is a literature-based study. It will be published in scientific Pubmed indexed open access journals to ensure its accessibility.

Conductas sexuales según sexo y nivel socioeconómico en adolescentes universitarios de una universidad pública de Chile

Objetivo principal: Analizar las conductas sexuales según sexo y nivel socioeconómico en universitarios de una Universidad Pública de Chile. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo, observacional analítico, de corte transversal en una muestra 94 estudiantes de primer año de una Universidad Pública de Chile. La recolección de datos se realizó por medio de la aplicación de cuestionario descriptivo de antecedentes sociodemográficos y conductas sexuales. Resultados: El 69,1% de los universitarios iniciaron actividades sexuales cuando tenían 16 o más años. El sexo masculino presentó con mayor frecuencia conductas de riesgo en comparación al sexo femenino. En cuanto a la frecuencia de conductas de riesgo por nivel socioeconómico no se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas. Conclusión principal: Se descarta que el nivel socioeconómico sea un condicionante de las conductas sexuales de riesgo predominantes en el sexo masculino.

Consulta puerperal: ¿las enfermeras egresadas de una residencia obstétrica realizan esta práctica?

Objetivo principal: comprender cómo se ha realizado la asistencia ofrecida en consultas puerperales por enfermeros egresados de un programa de residencia en enfermería obstétrica en una Universidad Pública del Sur de Minas Gerais. Metodología: estudio cualitativo, descriptivo y exploratorio, se utilizó el análisis de contenido de Bardin. La población está compuesta por ocho enfermeras parteras y la recolección de datos consistió en entrevistas semiestructuradas, en línea, a través de la plataforma Skype. Principales resultados: surgieron cuatro categorías temáticas, entre ellas: “Atención integral en la consulta puerperal”; “Facilidades, dificultades y posibilidades para realizar la consulta puerperal”; “Uso de metodologías activas en las consultas prenatales y puerperales para la educación en salud”, y “Las bases de la humanización del cuidado de enfermería a la puérpera”. Principal conclusión: se verificó que actúan de forma calificada, humanizada, integral, en concordancia con la literatura científica e identificadas dificultades, facilidades y posibilidades, así como la realización de la educación en salud y humanización de la atención puerperal.
