This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune function, duodenal digestive enzyme activity, and jejunal morphology in growing female minks. Ninety-six 12-week-old minks were randomly assigned to six groups (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, or 500 mg/kg COS), with 8 replicates per treatment and 2 minks per replicate, for an 8-week trial. Association Between Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index and Critically Ill Patients With Pressure Injury: Analysis of the MIMIC‐IV Database

ABSTRACT

Aims and Objectives

To explore the relationship between the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and the occurrence of Pressure injury (PI) in elderly Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients.

Background

PI represent a significant health concern within ICU, where the occurrence of such injuries is notably high among critically ill patients. However, few studies have explored the relationship between GNRI and PI.

Design

A longitudinal, single-centre, retrospective study.

Methods

The study utilised GNRI calculation to identify PI occurrences. A comprehensive set of covariates was analysed, including demographic information, severity of illness scores, comorbidities, therapeutic interventions, vital signs and laboratory values. Statistical analysis involved descriptive statistics, logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curves, supplemented by a doubly robust estimation method and propensity score modelling. This study follows the STROBE-nut checklist.

Results

Among 5327 critically ill patients enrolled in the study, with a median age of 76 years, of which 2339 were females, representing 43.91% of the total study population. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that with each unit increase in the GNRI, the likelihood of PI occurrence decreased by 3.7% in the fully adjusted model. Furthermore, there was a significant decrease in PI occurrence among patients deemed to have no risk compared to those identified as at-risk.

Conclusions

GNRI emerges as a significant, independent predictor of PI risk in elderly ICU patients, underscoring the importance of nutritional assessment and management in this population.

Relevance to Clinical Practice

This study highlights the critical importance of nutritional assessment, specifically through GNRI, in early identification and prevention of pressure injuries among elderly ICU patients, underscoring the need for integrated nutritional strategies in clinical settings.

Evaluating the role of Shujing Tongdu massage in enhancing wound recovery and alleviating spinal disease symptoms: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract

A randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted from 2022 to 2023 at a hospital specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai. A total of 564 participants were allocated into control and intervention groups in order to determine the effectiveness of Shujing Tongdu massage on patients with chronic lesions or spinal disorders. No significant differences were observed in baseline characteristics between the groups; age, gender and condition type were all distributed in a comparable manner. Following the implementation of Shujing Tongdu massage therapy twice weekly for the duration of 12 weeks, intervention group exhibited noteworthy enhancements. Significantly, rate of lesion healing achieved in the intervention group increased by 30%, while it merely improved by 10% in the control group. The intervention group exhibited decrease in pain intensity from 6.5 to 4.2, whereas control group demonstrated comparatively smaller reduction from 6.7 to 6.0. Range of motion in the intervention group increased substantially from 45 to 60 degrees, whereas it increased from 44 to 46 degrees in the control group. In the intervention group, Quality of Life scores increased from 50 to 75, exceeding the increase of 58 in the control group. There was significant rise in the Mental Well-being Index for intervention group, from 60 to 80, in contrast to rise of 64 from 62 in the control group. Statistically significant outcomes were determined, establishing the massage therapy's efficacy. Mild discomfort and muscle soreness were the most frequent adverse effects in the intervention group, whereas vertigo was more prevalent in the control group. Based on the findings of this research, Shujing Tongdu massage therapy effectively promoted wound healing and mitigated symptoms associated with spinal disorders, indicating its potential as the supplementary therapeutic modality in clinical environments.

Meta‐analysis of minimally invasive arthroscopy with sodium hyaluronate for wound healing of knee osteoarthritis treatment in the elderly

Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is not merely a medical condition—it is a prevalent and incapacitating ailment that significantly affects the quality of life for millions worldwide, especially as they age. The incidence of KOA increases year by year with increasing age. This study evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of combining arthroscopy with sodium hyaluronate (SH) in the treatment of wound healing of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in elderly patients, with a focus on wound healing and overall joint function restoration. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the combination of arthroscopy and SH in geriatric KOA patients were identified through a systematic search of the scientific literature utilizing multiple databases and predefined search criteria. Ultimately, twelve investigations were included in the meta-analysis. Using Stata 15.1 software, data extraction and analysis were conducted using both fixed- and random-effects models, and a sensitivity analysis was conducted to assure the validity of the findings. Compared with arthroscopy alone, the combination of arthroscopy and SH significantly improved the efficiency rate, pain management (as measured by the Visual Analogue Scale), knee function (as measured by the Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale) and decreased levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1 and IL-6. The meta-analysis revealed minimal heterogeneity between studies, and the sensitivity analysis validated the results' reliability. The incorporation of SH into arthroscopic procedures for elderly patients with KOA provides significant therapeutic benefits, including improved wound healing, reduced inflammation and enhanced joint function overall. These results support the use of this combined approach in the management of KOA in the elderly population and emphasize the need for additional research to optimize treatment protocols and comprehend long-term outcomes.

Effect of drainage versus no drainage after thyroid surgery on wound complications, a meta‐analysis

Abstract

A meta-analysis study was used to assess whether not placing a drain after thyroidectomy reduces postoperative wound complications. A critical review of the comprehensive literature up to May 2023 was conducted using four databases: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and the web of science. Fourteen interrelated studies were reviewed after passing the inclusion and exclusion criteria established by the study and assessing the quality of the literature.95% confidence intervals (Cl) and odds ratios (OR) were calculated using fixed effects models. The data were meta-analysed using RevMan 5.3 software. The results showed that the use of drains during thyroid surgery did not have a favourable impact on patients. Intraoperative placement of drains did not reduce postoperative wound haematoma formation in patients, (OR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.54, 1.36 p = 0.52). However, the incidence of postoperative wound infection was significantly higher in patients with drains used in intraoperative thyroid surgery, (OR, 0.22; 95% CI, 0.10, 0.45 p < 0.0001). As the sample size of the randomised controlled study used for this meta-analysis was limited, it is important to approach the findings with caution when interpreting the results.Conducting additional high-quality research with larger sample sizes is crucial in order to further confirm these results and reduce the likelihood of duplication.
