To explore the influence of broader cultural and social factors on clinicians' care delivery to patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in the emergency department.
A qualitative exploratory study.
A social ecological perspective drawn from a Social Ecological Model was used to guide the study. Clinicians from two public hospital emergency departments in Southeast Queensland, Australia were recruited with purposive and snowballing sampling strategies. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken between October 2022 and September 2023. Data were analysed using a content analysis approach.
Seventeen clinicians participated in the interviews: nine nurses and eight doctors. Nine participants were born in a country outside of Australia. Three main themes were generated from the interview data: (i) cultural and religious diversity and challenges in care delivery; (ii) social interactions and communication in clinical care; and (iii) perception about care delivery, services and supports.
Findings from this study offer insight into clinicians' experiences and perspectives regarding the influence of cultural and religious diversity as well as cross-cultural communication and prejudice in care delivery. Social interactions and communication in clinical care were found to facilitate care delivery process and navigate challenges. Cultural competency training and multicultural services and resources can help support clinicians in providing culturally appropriate care in the emergency department.
The findings of this study may help inform the development of practical guidelines and strategies to support clinicians in care delivery. Appropriate training regarding cultural competency is essential to promote culturally appropriate care. Developing a tailored multicultural service and targeted resources in the emergency department is recommended in clinical practice.

A dual design based on a rapid review and an online survey.
The PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus databases were searched for studies published between January 2020 and June 2025 using the terms “PhD” AND “nursing”. In parallel, an online survey with open-ended questions was distributed to a purposive sample of academic experts in each European country. Findings from the literature were juxtaposed and integrated with the data from the expert survey and integrated.
A total of 23 studies and 26 expert opinions. Doctoral nursing education in Europe is facing seven key challenges regarding: (1) institutions and their structure, (2) supervision, (3) candidates, (4) research process and outcomes, (5) professional development and career progression, (6) international collaboration and (7) paradigm-related concerns. Six anticipated changes/recommendations were identified in (1) structural and policy reforms, (2) supervision and mentoring, (3) candidate recruitment, retention and support, (4) financial and institutional support, (5) professional development and career recognition, (6) collaboration and internationalisation. While some challenges and changes were confirmed by the literature, others emerged from the experts' insights.
Complex challenges are faced by European doctoral nursing education, some under-researched as issues of supervision and candidate experience. Strengthening structures, mentorship and international collaboration is essential to align education with academic standards and healthcare needs.
Efforts are needed at the European level to strengthen doctoral education in nursing to ensure well-prepared academic and clinical nurses.
Findings may support in the development of more cohesive and high-quality doctoral nursing programs across Europe and inform targeted reforms.

To describe the factors that characterise nursing programs that continue to attract a high number of applicants even though the total number of applicants is declining.
A qualitative embedded case study in Italy on 2025.
A purposive sample of four undergraduate nursing programs for which there were more applicants than places in the last three academic years, compared to the rest of the macro-region, where an average ratio of 0.8 applicants/place was documented. Key informants (dean, clinical practice coordinator, nurse educators, students) from each program were involved. A semi-structured, open-ended interview was conducted focusing on the factors that make the identified nursing programs attractive. The recorded interviews (n = 19) were analysed thematically by triangulating the data. A member check was also conducted.
Five factors make a nursing program attractive: (1) the strategic location of the university, (2) the reputation and influence of the nursing program, (3) the structured, innovative, and open-oriented nursing curriculum, (4) the quality of the tutorial system and (5) the program's commitment to student support and development.
Even in times of declining enrollment and fewer applicants, certain factors can make a nursing program magnetic.
The map of emerging factors can serve as a strategy to help nursing programs attract students and improve their overall appeal.

With ambient listening systems increasingly adopted in healthcare, analyzing clinician-patient conversations has become essential. The Omaha System is a standardized terminology for documenting patient care, classifying health problems into four domains across 42 problems and 377 signs/symptoms. Manually identifying and mapping these problems is time-consuming and labor-intensive. This study aims to automate health problem identification from clinician-patient conversations using large language models (LLMs) with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
Using the Omaha System framework, we analyzed 5118 utterances from 22 clinician-patient encounters in home healthcare. RAG-enhanced LLMs detected health problems and mapped them to Omaha System terminology. We evaluated different model configurations, including embedding models, context window sizes, parameter settings (top k, top p), and prompting strategies (zero-shot, few-shot, and chain-of-thought). Three LLMs—Llama 3.1-8B-Instruct, GPT-4o-mini, and GPT-o3-mini—were compared using precision, recall, and F1-score against expert annotations.
The optimal configuration used a 1-utterance context window, top k = 15, top p = 0.6, and few-shot learning with chain-of-thought prompting. GPT-4o-mini achieved the highest F1-score (0.90) for both problem and sign/symptom identification, followed by GPT-o3-mini (0.83/0.82), while Llama 3.1-8B-Instruct performed worst (0.73/0.72).
Using the Omaha System, LLMs with RAG effectively automate health problem identification in clinical conversations. This approach can enhance documentation completeness, reduce documentation burden, and potentially improve patient outcomes through more comprehensive problem identification, translating into tangible improvements in clinical efficiency and care delivery.

To determine the prevalence of MARSI associated with peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICCs) in oncology and haematology patients, analyse the type of injury and identify risk factors.
A prospective descriptive study was conducted from 9 June 2021 to 8 February 2022. The study population was oncology and haematology patients with a PICC. The variables to be studied included the presence of MARSI in relation to PICC maintenance, injury type, time to onset, mean healing time, and type of treatment received. A descriptive analysis of the entire sample was performed. Chi-square and Student's t-test or Mann–Whitney U-tests were used to identify risk factors, depending on the nature of the variables.
The sample studied was 342 PICCs inserted in 309 patients, 49% (n = 169) women, and the mean overall age was 62.12 years (SD: 12.33). Seventy-six per cent were oncology and 24% haematology patients. The prevalence of MARSI was 32% (n = 111). The most common type of injury was erythema in 39% (n = 42). The mean duration of the lesion was 20.90 days (SD: 31.44). Alkylating agents, among others, were identified as a risk factor.
The results indicate a high prevalence of MARSI. In agreement with the literature, mechanical injuries are the most frequent, and some antineoplastic treatments are a risk factor. This study may help to identify areas for improvement and design strategies for the prevention and treatment of MARSI.
This study has implications for clinical practice, as it helps to identify areas for improvement and the most relevant clinical practice guideline recommendations to avoid this adverse event.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has demonstrated positive effects on emotional well-being and quality of life in individuals with dementia. Limited evidence constrains the generalisability of these findings.
This review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that implemented CBT and assessed cognitive function, depressive symptoms, anxiety and quality of life in individuals with dementia were included. Seven databases—APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed and Web of Science—were searched up to 10 October 2024. The Risk of Bias 2 (RoB-2) tool was used to evaluate the methodological quality of included studies. Pooled standardised mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random-effects models for each outcome.
A total of 10 RCTs, involving 1412 individuals with dementia and published between 2011 and 2024, were included in the analysis. CBT was associated with a reduction in anxiety (pooled SMD = −0.94; 95% CI = −1.33 to −0.55; I 2 = 0.00%; p < 0.04). No significant differences were found in cognitive function, depression or quality of life between those receiving CBT and those in the control groups.
This study suggests that CBT alleviates anxiety in people with dementia. However, further investigation is required to clarify its effects on cognitive function, depressive symptoms and quality of life. Future research should focus on the development of CBT protocols, alongside the exploration of relevant outcome measures.
CBT has shown potential in improving emotional well-being and quality of life in individuals with dementia. The findings inform healthcare professionals about its clinical utility and effectiveness in dementia care.
The findings suggest that traditional CBT may not fully address the needs of people with dementia, emphasising the importance of incorporating multisensory stimulation and caregiver involvement to enhance therapeutic outcomes.
Work wellbeing, also known as workplace wellbeing, is a global concern for nurses, particularly because excessive stress and exhaustion contribute to burnout.
The Caring Science International Collaborative (CSIC), an international research network, empirically investigates nurse work wellbeing using the Profile of Caring, a psychometrically validated and reliable instrument.
The CSIC framework defines wellbeing intrinsically—as caring and clarity—and extrinsically—as the social and technical resources needed to work efficiently and effectively. The Profile of Caring explains 80% of work wellbeing in nursing without bias across 10 countries.
This research protocol describes an international multicenter observational study that measures nurse work wellbeing using the Profile of Caring and other concepts and outcomes measures.
Patient safety in undergraduate nursing studies is an indispensable component of the curriculum. The process of experiential learning from practice is of high value not only in terms of personal development but also enables students to identify and address critical areas of patient safety that require improvement.
To explore Czech undergraduate nursing students' perceptions of patient safety culture during clinical practice through a mixed-method sequential study.
Data were collected between 2021 and 2024 using a mixed-method approach. The quantitative phase utilised the hospital survey on patient safety culture for nursing students. Four hundred and eighty-two undergraduate nursing students from 16 faculties across the Czech Republic participated. The subsequent qualitative phase employed semi-structured interviews with 12 undergraduate nursing students from one faculty in the Czech Republic. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to analyse quantitative results, complemented by a reflective thematic analysis of qualitative data.
The most negatively rated survey dimensions were ‘Frequency of events reported’ (37.0%) and ‘Nonpunitive responses to errors’ (42.4%). Predictors for reporting adverse events in clinical practice were ‘Indicators of good practice’ (p ≤ 0.05). Based on the quantitative phase, the interpretive journey of nursing students' experiences from Exposure to adverse events, through Feeling disconnected and Cognitive dissonance, to the necessity of Speaking up for patient safety culture was captured in the qualitative phase.
Nursing students struggle to engage in a patient safety culture, particularly in reporting adverse events during clinical practice. Strengthening education on reporting and standards is essential for students, along with professional development for clinical staff to align practices and cultures.
To understand the role of simulation in ensuring the development of the competencies expected by newly graduated register nurses (NGRNs) from the work initiation up to 5 months of transition.
Mixed-method study design. A longitudinal phase employing the Nurse Competence Scale (NCS, from 0 to 100, excellent) to assess the perceived competencies among NGRNs (N = 151) at three time points (first day of work up to fifth month); followed by a qualitative phase involving four focus groups of preceptors (N = 16) to explore the potential role of simulation in the NGRNs' working transition. Integration was performed at findings level, using the building procedures and joint displaying the results.
During the different time periods, variations emerged in the NCS scores from 64.41 out of 100 in the first day of work to 61.82 after 15 days, reaching 69.25 and 73.21 at 3 and 5 months. Nine potentialities have been identified as having simulation supporting NGRNs during their transition to independent practice. Simulation may contribute to develop competencies in some competence domains (diagnostic function, managing situation, therapeutic intervention, quality assurance and working role) while not in others (helping role and teaching–coaching).
Early interventions, through integration of simulation sessions into strategies offered at the unit's level may be useful to ensure an effective working transition.
Problem the study addresses: Challenges in transition from education to working settings are increasing given the difficulties of the units in providing time and support to NGRNs. Main findings: Competencies of NGRNs' are fluctuant in the five first months of work, and sub-optimal in certain domains. Simulation may support the full development of most competencies. Impact on research: Healthcare organisations can support NGRNs to ensure smoother transitions by integrating simulations in their strategy.

To synthesise stakeholders' experiences and perceptions of animal-assisted intervention (AAI) for people with dementia in community care settings.
Qualitative evidence synthesis.
We systematically searched Medline, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO and AgeLine for potentially eligible studies. Thematic synthesis was used to analyse the data from included studies. We assessed the methodological limitations of included studies using an adaptation of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist and used Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative Research (GRADE-CERQual) tool to assess confidence in review findings. This review is reported using the ENTREQ checklist.
We included 14 reports from 11 studies and developed three analytical themes incorporating a gardening analogy: planting–connecting with animals, growing–engaging in AAI and nurturing–making AAI work; and six subthemes: willingness to connect, building relationships, a rich experience, the benefits of AAI, individualised and holistic approach and training and support, with 15 key findings.
This review describes people's experiences and perceptions of AAI for people with dementia, and provides recommendations on the development and implementation of AAI, with moderate to high confidence. Nurses need to consider the factors that influence the implementation of AAI identified in this review, to facilitate engagement and long-term impacts while adopting AAI in community care settings.
This review may enhance healthcare professionals' understanding of AAI for people with dementia in community care settings. AAI is a complex intervention that can be delivered in varied manner. A multicomponent, flexible and individualised AAI is important. Additional training and education for staff are needed.

To evaluate the incidence of skin-related complications attributable to incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) using an external female urinary catheter device strategy for urinary incontinent (UI) patients in acute care.
Multicenter quality improvement study.
Randomized allocation of two commercially available external female urinary catheter devices was used in hospitalized UI female patients. Daily nursing skin assessments were documented in the electronic health record before, during and after external catheter device application. Methods and results were reported following SQUIRE guidelines.
Three hundred and eighty-one patients from 57 inpatient care units were included in the analysis. Both catheter devices were associated with an overall low risk (5 %) of new or worsening skin breakdown.
The overall benefit of external catheters is most persuasive for skin integrity, rather than infection prevention.
Significant negative outcomes are associated with UI patients. External female urinary catheters are a non-invasive alternative strategy to reduce exposure of regional skin to urine contamination and IAD-related skin complications. Use of external female urinary catheters in hospitalized UI female patients offers low risk (5%) of new or worsening overall skin breakdown.
Hospitalized UI female patients were screened for external catheter device eligibility by the bedside nurse. The quality improvement review committee waved consent because the intervention was considered standard care.
The systematic review aims to synthesize the literature examining the effectiveness of nurse-led remote digital support on health outcomes in adults with chronic conditions.
Adults with chronic diseases have increased rates of mortality and morbidity and use health care resources at a higher intensity than those without chronic conditions—placing strain on the patient, their caregivers and health systems. Nurse-led digital health disease self-management interventions have potential to improve outcomes for patients with chronic conditions by facilitating care in environments other that the hospital setting.
We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO and Cochrane Central databases from inception to 7 December 2022. We included randomized controlled trials assessing the impact of nurse-led remote digital support interventions compared to usual care on health-related outcomes in adults with chronic illness. The Cochrane risk-of-bias tool was used to assess bias in studies. Outcomes were organized into four categories: self-management, clinical outcomes, health care resource use and satisfaction with care. Results are presented narratively based on statistical significance.
Forty-four papers pertaining to 40 unique studies were included. Interventions most targeted diabetes (n = 11) and cardiovascular disease (n = 8). Websites (n = 10) and mobile applications (n = 10) were the most used digital modalities. Nurses supported patients either in response to incoming patient health data (n = 14), virtual appointment (n = 8), virtual health education (n = 5) or through a combination of these approaches (n = 13). Positive impacts of nurse-led digital chronic disease support were identified in each outcome category. Mobile applications were the most effective digital modality.
Results show that nurse-led remote digital support interventions significantly improve self-management capacity, clinical health outcomes, health care resource use and satisfaction with care. Such interventions have potential to support overall health for adults with chronic conditions in their home environments.
To explore home-dwelling people with dementia and family members' perceptions of the feasibility and acceptability of an intervention using dementia-related literature excerpts to facilitate conversations on ethical issues related to living with dementia.
Ethical issues in dementia care emerge throughout the illness. In the early stages, they may involve decisions about disclosing the illness to the family, shifting roles and responsibilities, and considerations of transitioning to a nursing home. Addressing ethical issues and providing adequate support to home-dwelling people with dementia and their families are often lacking.
An exploratory-descriptive qualitative study.
We conducted eight interviews with 14 home-dwelling persons with dementia and their family caregivers. Six were dyadic interviews, and two were individual interviews with family caregivers. We analysed the interview data using template analysis. We adhered to the COREQ checklist in reporting this study.
Using excerpts from dementia-related literature was a feasible and acceptable way of initiating discussions on ethical issues among home-dwelling persons with dementia and family caregivers. However, engaging the families of newly diagnosed individuals was challenging due to emotional distress. The intervention provided peer support, including identifying with others and sharing experiences. Moreover, participating couples found intimacy and relational attunement through shared reflections.
Based on the findings, it appears that the participants in this study felt that using excerpts from dementia-related literature to deliberate on ethical issues was feasible and acceptable. Deliberating on ethical issues with peers and family caregivers offers valuable social support and opportunities for strengthening relationships.
This study makes an important contribution by providing valuable insights into how ethical issues related to living with dementia can be addressed using related literature and suggests how the intervention can be integrated into existing care initiatives for home-dwelling people with dementia and their families.

A healthcare professional working as a so-called dementia coordinator (a title used in the Danish context) was involved in the conduct of this study by being responsible for the recruitment of home-dwelling people with dementia and their family members. Moreover, she had joint responsibility for facilitating the intervention along with the first author.
To identify clinical observable items that can be used to identify dysphagia while observing a typical eating situation.
A three-round e-Delphi survey.
An expert panel consisting of five nurses, eight speech language therapists and five physicians participated in this three-round e-Delphi survey from November 2022 to January 2023. Round 1 presented the results of a literature research conducted in September 2022 and an open question to the participants. The answers were analysed using the content analysis method. In the following rounds, the results were presented back to the participants with a request to rate them for usefulness. Means, standard deviations, ANOVA and Fisher's exact test were used to demonstrate the panel's opinion, level of agreement, demographic characteristics of the participants as well as differences between the professional groups in regard of the rating of the items. Methods and results are reported in accordance with the ‘Guidance on Conducting and Reporting Delphi Studies’ (CREDES).
The content analysis initially generated 36 items suggested by the expert panel. Seven additional items were incorporated from the literature review. In rounds 2 and 3, a 4-point Likert scale was used to rate each item and to calculate the level of agreement. The predetermined level of agreement exceeded 70% for 23 items.
Based on the expert opinions, it is possible for nurses to identify dysphagia in patients with dementia by using the determined 23 items while observing a typical eating situation.
The expert panel contributed to the creation of this study by participating in the Delphi rounds.
The 23 items determined in this e-Delphi study enable nurses to make dietary adjustments or consult other members of the multidisciplinary team based on available evidence, enabling complications to be avoided.

This study aimed to assess mental health nurses' empathy towards consumers with dual diagnosis in Australian mental health settings. The research question was What is mental health nurses' empathy towards consumers with co-existing mental health and drug and alcohol problems?
A cross-sectional survey was carried out to understand mental health nurses' empathy. The convenience sample included 96 mental health nurses from various mental health settings with experience working with consumers with dual diagnosis. We assessed empathy using the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire. We utilised SPSS™ software to analyse both the descriptive data and multiple-regression.
The mean empathy score was 47.71 (SD 8.28). The analysis of the association between demographic variables and individual subscales showed an association between the clinical setting and empathy (p = .031) and sympathetic physiological arousal (p = .049). The work sector was associated with sympathetic physiological arousal (p = .045) and conspecific altruism (p = .008). Emotional contagion (β = .98, p < .001), emotional comprehension (β = 1.02, p < .001), sympathetic physiological arousal (β = 1.01, p < .001) and conspecific altruism (β = 10.23, p < .001) predicted mental health nurses' empathy.
This study found that most mental health nurses showed empathy towards consumers with dual diagnosis. Mental health nurses who are more empathetic towards their consumers experience emotional contagion. They understand emotions better, show sympathetic physiological responses and exhibit kind behaviour towards consumers.
Further research is required to understand how mental health nurses adapt to consumers' emotional states in different mental health settings. This information can help clinicians make better decisions about care quality for consumers with dual diagnosis.
This study addressed mental health nurses' empathy towards consumers with dual diagnosis. Mental health nurses showed increased empathy towards consumers with dual diagnosis. The empathy levels vary based on age, clinical setting, work sector and work experience. Mental health nurses' empathy levels were predicted by emotional contagion, emotion comprehension, sympathetic physiological arousal and conspecific altruism. Empathy enhancement among mental health nurses, particularly towards consumers with dual diagnosis, is crucial and should be regarded as a top priority by healthcare leaders and educators.

To determine the prevalence and clustering of NANDA-International nursing diagnoses in patients assisted by pre-hospital emergency teams.
Retrospective descriptive study of electronic record review.
Episodes recorded during 2019, including at least a nursing diagnosis, were recovered from the electronic health records of a Spanish public emergency agency (N = 28,847). Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the sample and determine prevalence. A two-step cluster analysis was used to group nursing diagnoses. A comparison between clusters in sociodemographic and medical problems was performed. Data were accessed in November 2020.
Risk for falls (00155) (27.3%), Anxiety (00146) (23.2%), Acute pain (00132), Fear (00148) and Ineffective breathing pattern (00032) represented 96.1% of all recorded diagnoses. A six-cluster solution (n = 26.788) was found. Five clusters had a single high-prevalence diagnosis predominance: Risk for falls (00155) in cluster 1, Anxiety (00146) in cluster 2, Fear (00148) in cluster 3, Acute pain (00132) in cluster 4 and Ineffective breathing pattern (00032) in cluster 6. Cluster 5 had several high prevalence diagnoses which co-occurred: Risk for unstable blood glucose level (00179), Ineffective coping (00069), Ineffective health management (00078), Impaired comfort (00214) and Impaired verbal communication (00051).
Five nursing diagnoses accounted for almost the entire prevalence. The identified clusters showed that pre-hospital patients present six patterns of nursing diagnoses. Five clusters were predominated by a predominant nursing diagnosis related to patient safety, coping, comfort, and activity/rest, respectively. The sixth cluster grouped several nursing diagnoses applicable to exacerbations of chronic diseases.
Knowing the prevalence and clustering of nursing diagnoses allows a better understanding of the human responses of patients attended by pre-hospital emergency teams and increases the evidence of individualized/standardized care plans in the pre-hospital clinical setting.
What problem did the study address? There are different models of pre-hospital emergency care services. The use of standardized nursing languages in the pre-hospital setting is not homogeneous. Studies on NANDA-I nursing diagnoses in the pre-hospital context are scarce, and those available are conducted on small samples.
What were the main findings? This paper reports the study with the largest sample among the few published on NANDA-I nursing diagnoses in the pre-hospital care setting. Five nursing diagnoses represented 96.1% of all recorded. These diagnoses were related to patients' safety/protection and coping/stress tolerance. Patients attended by pre-hospital care teams are grouped into six clusters based on the nursing diagnoses, and this classification is independent of the medical conditions the patient suffers.

Knowing the prevalence of nursing diagnoses allows a better understanding of the human responses of patients treated in the pre-hospital setting, increasing the evidence of individualized and standardized care plans for pre-hospital care.

To explore and summarise the literature on the concept of ‘clinical deterioration’ as a nurse-sensitive indicator of quality of care in the out-of-hospital context.
The scoping review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Review and the JBI best practice guidelines for scoping reviews.
Studies focusing on clinical deterioration, errors of omission, nurse sensitive indicators and the quality of nursing and midwifery care for all categories of registered, enrolled, or licensed practice nurses and midwives in the out-of-hospital context were included regardless of methodology. Text and opinion papers were also considered. Study protocols were excluded.
Data bases were searched from inception to June 2022 and included CINAHL, PsychINFO, MEDLINE, The Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, EmCare, Maternity and Infant Care Database, Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet, Informit Health and Society Database, JSTOR, Nursing and Allied Health Database, RURAL, Cochrane Library and Joanna Briggs Institute.
Thirty-four studies were included. Workloads, education and training opportunities, access to technology, home visits, clinical assessments and use of screening tools or guidelines impacted the ability to recognise, relay information and respond to clinical deterioration in the out-of-hospital setting.
Little is known about the work of nurses or midwives in out-of-hospital settings and their recognition, reaction to and relay of information about patient deterioration. The complex and subtle nature of non-acute deterioration creates challenges in defining and subsequently evaluating the role and impact of nurses in these settings.
Further research is needed to clarify outcome measures and nurse contribution to the care of the deteriorating patient in the out-of-hospital setting to reduce the rate of avoidable hospitalisation and articulate the contribution of nurses and midwives to patient care.
Factors that impact a nurse's ability to recognise, relay information and respond to clinical deterioration in the out-of-hospital setting are not examined to date.

Nurses and nursing management will benefit from understanding the factors that act as barriers and facilitators for effective recognition of, and responding to, a deteriorating patient in the out-of-hospital setting. This in turn will impact patient survival and satisfaction.
