Intergenerational Relationships and Their Impact on Social Resilience Amongst Arab Society Elderly Populations: A Qualitative Exploration

ABSTRACT

Aim

To explore the impact of intergenerational relationships on the social resilience of elderly populations in Arab societies. Additionally, the study aimed to identify the factors that influence the quality of these relationships and their role in enhancing or diminishing the resilience of older adults.

Design

A qualitative study.

Method

Semi-structured interviews were conducted between June and July 2024 with 12 elderly participants from urban and semi-urban communities in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. Data were analysed using both deductive framework analysis, guided by social support theory, and inductive thematic analysis to identify key themes related to intergenerational relationships and social resilience.

Results

The study involved 12 participants aged 61–85 years (average age of 72 years), with a mix of educational backgrounds and living arrangements. Strong intergenerational ties were found to significantly enhance social resilience by providing emotional support and a sense of security. Participants in multi-generational households reported more positive outcomes compared to those with less frequent family contact. However, generational differences and modern-life pressures posed challenges to maintaining these relationships.

Conclusion

The findings underscore the importance of fostering strong intergenerational relationships to support the social resilience of elderly populations in Arab societies. Future research should explore interventions that bridge generational gaps and strengthen family ties, particularly in the context of evolving social structures.

Implication for the Profession and/or Patient Care

Healthcare practitioners and policymakers should consider the role of intergenerational relationships when designing interventions aimed at improving the well-being and resilience of older adults in a culturally sensitive approaches.

Perceptions of Resilience Among Nurses: A Qualitative Study Based on the Society‐To‐Cells Framework

ABSTRACT

Aim(s)

To explore the perceptions of resilience among nurses using the Society-to-Cells Resilience Theory and examine how multilevel factors influence their ability to maintain resilience in high-stress environments.

Design

A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews.

Methods

Sixteen registered nurses from various healthcare settings in the Asir region, Saudi Arabia, participated in face-to-face interviews conducted from February to April 2024. The interviews were analysed thematically to identify key factors affecting resilience at individual, familial, institutional and societal levels.

Results

Four key themes emerged: individual coping strategies, family and social support, institutional support mechanisms and societal recognition. Nurses identified personal coping methods, such as mindfulness and exercise, as essential for maintaining resilience. Family and social networks played a crucial role in emotional support. Institutional factors, such as adequate staffing and leadership support, were vital to resilience, while a lack of societal recognition negatively impacted nurses' well-being.

Conclusion

Resilience in nursing is a multifaceted process influenced by individual, institutional and societal factors. Supportive work environments, adequate resources and recognition of nurses' contributions are critical in fostering resilience.

Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care

The findings emphasise the need for healthcare institutions to implement policies and support mechanisms that address both the personal and professional challenges nurses face. Promoting resilience can improve nurse retention, job satisfaction and patient care outcomes.

Comparing Evidence‐Based Practice Competencies, Adoption, Barriers, and Predictors Among Nurses and Other Healthcare Professionals Across the Eastern Mediterranean Region

ABSTRACT

Background

Current research lacks a comprehensive understanding of evidence-based practice (EBP) adoption and its predictors across diverse healthcare professionals (HCPs) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), particularly with a direct comparison between nurses and other professional groups.

Objectives

This study aims to evaluate the EBP competencies, adoption levels, identified barriers, and associated predictors among nurses and other healthcare professionals (HCPs) within the EMR.

Methods

A cross-sectional, correlational, and comparative design was used. An electronic survey was distributed (April 27th–August 17th, 2023) via convenience/snowball sampling, inviting nurses, physicians, physiotherapists, dentists, and pharmacists across the EMR to complete the survey. Multivariate regression analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to identify predictors of EBP adoption.

Results

A total of 4673 HCPs participated and reported several barriers to EBP adoption, including time constraints, difficulties in interpreting statistics, lack of authority to change practices, and insufficient equipment. Nurses had fewer postgraduate degrees but more work experience and full-time employment than other HCPs. Despite reporting more workplace EBP support, nurses read less research, had lower EBP scores and adoption propensity, and perceived greater barriers than other HCPs (p < 0.002). Multivariate regression showed the highest barrier scores in Syria/Tunisia and the lowest in the United Arab Emirates. Nurses reported significantly higher barriers compared to other HCPs (p < 0.001). Fear of Change was not a primary barrier overall, but was elevated in specific subgroups of nurses. SEM showed good fit: RMSEA = 0.077, SRMR = 0.053, CFI = 0.80, χ 2(df) = 917, p < 0.001. SEM showed that EBP adoption propensity and fear of change significantly mediate the relationship between HCPs' characteristics and EBP scores.

Linking Evidence to Action

Despite having a positive attitude and propensity towards EBP, nurses lack the necessary knowledge and support to adopt it, and they face more barriers than other healthcare professionals. Nurses require greater support from healthcare leaders to enhance their EBP competencies and address the reported barriers. Policymakers and organizations should prioritize tailored, role-specific training and supportive structures and environments to ensure equitable and effective EBP implementation for improving patient outcomes across the EMR.

Orchestrating Human Connection in Digital NICUs: Leadership Strategies for Technology‐Enhanced Family‐Centred Care

Aim(s)

To explore how neonatal nurse leaders sustain human-centred care while implementing digital technologies in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).

Design

Qualitative descriptive multi-site study across four NICUs in the Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia (November 2024–May 2025), reported in accordance with COREQ.

Methods

Purposive maximum-variation sampling recruited 24 neonatal nurse leaders across leadership levels, hospital types and digital maturity stages. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in Arabic or English, transcribed, translated as needed and thematically analysed in NVivo 14 using a hybrid inductive–deductive approach. Directed content analysis of key organisational documents enabled triangulation. Trustworthiness was supported through member checking, peer debriefing, audit trail, external review and double coding of a subset of transcripts.

Results

Four interrelated strategies were identified: (1) embedding a values-based human-centred vision; (2) selecting and customising digital tools to strengthen, not replace, nurse–family connection; (3) redesigning workflows (e.g., device-free openings, protected presence time, family-inclusive portals) to preserve presence and partnership; and (4) fostering team capability and psychological safety for digital–human integration.

Conclusion

Human-centred care in digital NICUs is intentionally led and structurally engineered. The study offers a practice-ready framework that translates values into reproducible routines within complex sociotechnical systems.

Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care

The framework supports nurse leaders in aligning digital transformation with family-centred care, protecting nurse–family presence, and enhancing safety, trust and partnership for high-risk neonates.

Impact

Addresses risks of relational erosion in digital and AI-enabled NICUs and provides transferable nurse-led strategies to sustain ethical, family-centred practice.
