The quality of life of patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer is seriously impaired, and socioeconomic deprivation often has a serious impact on their quality of life. However, little is known about the relative contribution of non-socioeconomic factors to the quality of life of patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer with socioeconomic deprivation.
This study aims to investigate the situation and predictors of quality of life of patients with socioeconomic deprivation and evaluate the independent effects of some non-socioeconomic factors.
A retrospective study based on cross-sectional design.
Data were obtained from 1075 patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer who received family palliative treatment in the hospice ward of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University from March 2010 to October 2020, including demographic and clinical questionnaires, Karnofsky Performance Status scale and Cancer Pain and Quality of Life Questionnaire of Chinese Cancer Patients.
The quality of life of patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer with socioeconomic deprivation is impaired and is affected by gait, self-care ability, abdominal distension, nutritional status, weight loss, constipation and posture. Improvement in six of these factors—gait, self-care ability, abdominal distension, nutritional status, weight loss and posture—has an independent positive impact on the development of a healthy quality of life for patients.
Gait, self-care ability, abdominal distension, nutritional status, weight loss and posture are important determinants of healthy quality of life in patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer with socioeconomic deprivation, and early identification and strength management of these non-socioeconomic factors may neutralize the negative impact of socioeconomic factors on the quality of life.
This study provides new ideas and intervention entry points for global nurses in practice innovations to improve the quality of life of socioeconomically deprived patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer. It enables them to focus on the effectiveness of non-socioeconomic factors in the development and implementation of targeted care plans for patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer experiencing socioeconomic deprivation globally.

To explore women's and health professionals' views on the development of a midwifery-led mHealth app intervention in antenatal care and their demands for app functionality.
Descriptive qualitative research was utilized.
In total, 15 pregnant or postpartum women were interviewed via in-depth interviews and 10 health professionals including obstetricians, midwives and obstetric nurses were invited to participate in a focus group discussion (FGD). All interviews and the FGD were analysed using qualitative content analysis.
Four key themes emerged from the data, including (1) limitations of current maternity care services; (2) potential benefits for mHealth app-based midwifery care; (3) possible challenges for providing midwifery care through mHealth apps and (4) suggestions and needs for developing a midwifery-led mHealth app. Participants agreed on the potential need of developing a midwifery-led mHealth app in antenatal care to increase access to midwifery care services and to meet women's diverse needs. Participants preferred to develop professional, reliable, full-featured and interactive mobile applications. The main functions of midwifery-led mHealth apps included personalized assessment and health education, self-monitoring and feedback, data sharing and interactive functions. Women mentioned that online communication and consultation with midwives could help them receive continuous support outside facilities. Health professionals expressed it would be of great convenience and timeliness to send personalized messages to women and to inform them of healthy lifestyles during pregnancy. The challenges included a shortage of human resources, medico-legal risks associated with mHealth and data security risks.
This study explores the individual views and functional needs of target users and healthcare providers for developing a midwifery-led mHealth app in antenatal care, which will serve as a reference for future application development.
Our study has important and practical implications for guiding the development of future midwifery-led mHealth app interventions.

To summarize existing studies that focused on improving hospitalized patient safety through patient and family engagement interventions to identify priorities and gaps.
A scoping review.
Eight databases and citations of important reviews were searched on 30 September 2022. Two researchers independently screened the records. Then, two researchers extracted the data and cross-checked. The results were synthesized narratively, and a comparison was performed for studies from China and those from other countries.
Ninety-eight studies were included. The results indicated that patient and family engagement interventions were applied to decrease the incidence of patient safety incidents, and to improve the healthcare providers' and patients' knowledge, attitude or practice of patient safety. Most studies only engaged patients and families at the direct care level, and the engagement strategies at the organization and health system levels were insufficient. For stakeholders, many studies failed to consider patients' perspectives in intervention design and report taking staff training as a supportive strategy. Healthcare providers, especially nurses, were the main implementers of current interventions. Certain differences were observed between studies from China and those from other countries in the above aspects.
International interest in engaging patient and family for patient safety is growing. Future studies should enhance the patient and family engagement as a partner in various patient safety at the direct care level, and further explore the engagement at the organization and health system levels.
Nurses, as the main formal caregivers for patients, should promote patient and family engagement in patient safety, especially at direct care level. Nurse should also incorporate the perspectives of patients in the design and implementation of interventions.

To examine the level and influencing factors of discharge readiness among patients with oesophageal cancer following oesophagectomy and to explore its association with post-discharge outcomes (post-discharge coping difficulty and unplanned readmission).
Oesophageal cancer is common and usually treated via oesophagectomy in China. The assessment of patient's discharge readiness gradually attracts attention as patients tend to be discharged more quickly.
Prospective observational study. The STROBE statement was followed.
In total, 154 participants with oesophageal cancer after oesophagectomy were recruited in a tertiary cancer centre in Southern China from July 2019 to January 2020. The participants completed a demographic and disease-related questionnaire, the Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale and Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale before discharge. Post-discharge outcomes were investigated on the 21st day (post-discharge coping difficulty) and 30th day (unplanned readmission) after discharge separately. Multiple linear regressions were used for statistical analysis.
The mean scores of discharge readiness and quality of discharge teaching were (154.02 ± 31.58) and (138.20 ± 24.20) respectively. The quality of discharge teaching, self-care ability, dysphagia and primary caregiver mainly influenced patient's discharge readiness and explained 63.0% of the variance. The low discharge readiness could predict more risk of post-discharge coping difficulty (r = −0.729, p < 0.01) and unplanned readmission (t = −2.721, p < 0.01).
Discharge readiness among patients with oesophageal cancer following oesophagectomy is influenced by various factors, especially the quality of discharge teaching. A high discharge readiness corresponds to good post-discharge outcomes.
Healthcare professionals should improve the discharge readiness by constructing high-quality discharge teaching, cultivating patients' self-care ability, mobilizing family participation and alleviating dysphagia to decrease adverse post-discharge outcomes among patients with oesophageal cancer.
Patients with oesophageal cancer after oesophagectomy who met the inclusion criteria were recruited.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of placement of drainage channels and non-drainage channels in obese women on post-caesarean delivery. Documents were retrieved from four databases, such as PubMed and Embase. This study was not limited in time, language, or geography. This trial was conducted using either a cohort or a randomized, controlled study to compare the efficacy of placement of drain in caesarean delivery channel in obese women with or without drain for post-operative wound complications. The study excluded those who were restricted to those who were not overweight. The main results were the wound infection, the bleeding of the wound and the dehiscence. The risk of bias was evaluated by two authors with a risk-of-bias tool for nonrandomized intervention trials. The meta-analyses only included those that were considered to have a low-to-medium risk of bias. The data were pooled with a random-effects model to determine the relative risk and 95% confidence interval (CI). The quality of the evidence in the selection of results was evaluated. Of 329 related trials, eight were eligible for inclusion. There were 1868 cases of obesity who received C-section. Among them, there were 451 cases of drain and 1417 cases of non-drain. No statistical significance was found in the rate of post-operation infection of the post-operation between non-drain or drain treatment of obesity patients (OR, 0.8; 95% CI: 0.48–1.33; p = 0.39). Compared with those with non-drain, there was a reduction in the risk of haematoma after drain (OR, 0.34; 95% CI: 0.20–0.58; p < 0.0001). The results showed that there were no significant differences in the influence of drainage and non-drainage on the post-operative dehiscence of the patients with obesity (OR, 0.84; 95% CI: 0.15–4.70; p = 0.85). The results showed that there were no statistically different effects on the rate of post-operation wound infection and dehiscence after operation, but the rate of haematoma during drain operation was lower.
We conducted this study to investigate the effect of evidence-based care on surgical site wound infection after caesarean section. A computerised search of PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang databases for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on the use of evidence-based care in caesarean section delivery was applied from the database inception to November 2023. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted data and performed quality assessment based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Stata 17.0 software was applied for data analysis. Twenty-one RCTs involving 3269 caesarean sections were finally included. The analysis revealed the implementation of evidence-based nursing interventions was effective in reducing the incidence of post-caesarean section wound infections (OR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.21–0.39, p < 0.001) and complications (OR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.23–0.38, p < 0.001) compared with conventional care. This study shows that the application of evidence-based nursing in postoperative caesarean section care can effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative wound infection and complications and improve the quality of life, which is worthy of clinical nursing application and promotion.
Previous studies suggested that electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has the potential to guide positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) titration via quantifying the alveolar collapse and overdistension. The aim of this trial is to compare the effect of EIT-guided PEEP and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) network low PEEP/fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) table strategy on mortality and other clinical outcomes in patients with ARDS.
This is a parallel, two-arm, multicentre, randomised, controlled trial, conducted in China. All patients with ARDS under mechanical ventilation admitted to the intensive care unit will be screened for eligibility. The enrolled patients are stratified by the aetiology (pulmonary/extrapulmonary) and partial pressure of arterial oxygen/FiO2 (≥150 mm Hg or 2 table proposed by the ARDS Network. The primary outcome is 28-day survival.
Qualitative data will be analysed using the 2 test or Fisher’s exact test, quantitative data will be analysed using independent samples t-test or Mann-Whitney U test. Kaplan-Meier analysis with log-rank test will be used to evaluate the 28-day survival rate between two groups. All outcomes will be analysed based on the intention-to-treat principle.
The trial is approved by the Institutional Research and Ethics Committee of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Data will be published in peer-reviewed journals.

BackgroundCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may predispose patients to thrombotic disease in the venous and arterial circulations.
MethodsBased on the current debate on antiplatelet therapy in COVID-19 patients, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effect of antiplatelet treatments. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science on February 1, 2023, and only included Randomized clinical trials. The study followed PRISMA guidelines and used Random-effects models to estimate the pooled percentage and its 95% CI.
ResultsFive unique eligible studies were included, covering 17,950 patients with COVID-19. The result showed no statistically significant difference in the relative risk of all-cause death in antiplatelet therapy versus non-antiplatelet therapy (RR 0.94, 95% CI, 0.83–1.05, P = 0.26, I2 = 32%). Compared to no antiplatelet therapy, patients who received antiplatelet therapy had a significantly increased relative risk of major bleeding (RR 1.81, 95%CI 1.09–3.00, P = 0.02, I2 = 16%). The sequential analysis suggests that more RCTs are needed to draw more accurate conclusions. This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that the use of antiplatelet agents exhibited no significant benefit on all-cause death, and the upper bound of the confidence interval on all-cause death (RR 95% CI, 0.83–1.05) suggested that it was unlikely to be a substantiated harm risk associated with this treatment. However, evidence from all RCTs suggested a high risk of major bleeding in antiplatelet agent treatments.
ConclusionAccording to the results of our sequential analysis, there is not enough evidence available to support or negate the use of antiplatelet agents in COVID-19 cases. The results of ongoing and future well-designed, large, randomized clinical trials are needed.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious chronic disease worldwide, with significant negative impacts on the quality of life, family economic burden, and social healthcare burden of patients.
The aim of this study was to explore the effects of virtual reality technology on exercise function and lung function in COPD patients.
A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was utilized. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Medline, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, Weipu Database (VIP), and Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM) were systematically searched. We included randomized controlled trials published from the establishment of the database to August 10, 2022, on virtual reality technology in COPD patients. Literature retrieval and screening was carried out independently by two reviewers to obtain literature that met our inclusion and exclusion criteria and to extract relevant data. Two reviewers assessed the risk of bias in the included literature. A meta-analysis was performed using Revman 5.4 Software.
A total of 10 randomized controlled trials with 539 participants were included. The results showed that virtual reality technology significantly improved the lung function of COPD patients, such as forced expiratory volume (FEV1; MD = 7.29, 95% CI [4.34, 10.24], p < .01) and forced expiratory volume/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC; MD = 6.71, 95% CI [4.72, 8.71], p < .01). The combined intervention with different virtual reality technology had different effects on motor function. Compared with endurance training (ET) alone, virtual reality technology combined with ET had no significant effect on the 6-minute walk test (6WMT) in COPD patients (p > .05). Compared with pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) alone, virtual reality technology combined with PR was more effective in increasing 6WMT in COPD patients (MD = 30.80, 95% CI [10.85, 50.74], p < .01).
Virtual reality technology can help to improve lung function in COPD patients, and virtual reality combined with PR can improve exercise tolerance in COPD patients. However, due to the limited number of included studies, large-sample, multicenter, high-quality randomized controlled trial studies are needed to provide clear evidence.
We aim to evaluate the efficacy of sacral foam dressings in preventing sacral pressure injury.
The PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases were searched for relevant publications until October 2023. All studies evaluating the efficacy of sacral foam dressings in preventing sacral pressure injury were included. We calculated pooled risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for binary outcomes. The Cochrane's Risk of Bias Tool were used to evaluate the quality of studies.
A total of 9 randomized controlled studies with 3972 patients were included in this analysis. Sacral pressure injury rate was significantly lower in the sacral foam dressing group compared with the standard care group (RR: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.17–0.82). Furthermore, the rate of ≥stage II sacral pressure injury was also significantly reduced (RR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.37–0.83), along with a lower blanching erythema rate (RR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.42–0.97). No obvious publication bias was observed in the funnel plot (Egger's p values = 0.91).
Sacral foam dressing significantly reduced the incidence of sacral pressure injuries, including those of stage II or higher, and blanching erythema when compared to standard care without sacral foam dressing. However, the results should be interpreted with cautious because of the observed heterogeneity and the diverse patient population. Further larger, well-designed randomized control studies are needed.
This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of bone-transplantation over nonbone transplantation in treating intra-articular fractures of the heel bone on postsurgical complications. Our results were retrieved from the Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. The data of the injury of the patient and the wound infection were collected. Study were carried out with Revman 5.3 software. Eight operative trials associated with the implant of the heel were selected from a large number of publications. Among the 804 cases that needed operation on the heel, 410 cases were treated with bone grafting while 394 cases were not treated with the operation. Seven trials showed that there was no difference in the risk of post operative wound infection among patients who had received a bone-grafting operation on the heel or had not (OR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.51, 1.49 p = 0.62). There was no difference in the risk for post-operation marginal necrosis among patients who had received a bone-grafting operation on the heel or had not (OR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.42, 1.36 p = 0.34). The results of this show that there are no statistically significant differences in the incidence of post-operative necrosis and infection in the case of endarticular surgery of the heel.
Wound healing is a complex process that can lead to hypertrophic scarring (HS) when dysregulated. The role of lncRNAs in this process is increasingly recognized, yet the specific contributions of lncRNA STX17-AS1 require elucidation. This study investigated the expression of STX17-AS1, its regulatory effects on miR-145-5p, and downstream targets, highlighting its impact on wound repair and HS development. In a cohort of 20 HS patients and 20 matched controls, we assessed the expression of STX17-AS1, miR-145-5p and PDK1 via real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry. We correlated these expressions with wound characteristics and analysed their regulatory impact on the PI3K/AKT pathway, crucial for cellular proliferation and migration in wound healing. Elevated levels of STX17-AS1 and miR-145-5p in patient samples were correlated with larger wound areas and slower healing rates, suggesting the regulatory imbalance in scar formation. The negative correlation of PDK1 expression with age and its positive association with wound size underscored its relevance in wound repair mechanisms. Functional analysis confirmed the interaction between STX17-AS1 and miR-145-5p and modulation of PDK1, indicating the potential disruption of the PI3K/AKT pathway in the wound healing process. The study identified lncRNA STX17-AS1 as the significant mediator in wound healing, with aberrations in its pathway correlating with impaired healing and HS. The findings proposed lncRNA STX17-AS1 and miR-145-5p as molecular targets to enhance wound healing and prevent pathological scarring, offering a new avenue for therapeutic advances in wound management and regenerative medicine.
Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) represent a substantial challenge within the healthcare landscape, thereby necessitating efficacious therapeutic strategies. Exercise has been investigated as a prospective intervention to bolster the management of VLUs. The objective of this comprehensive review is to systematically scrutinize and appraise the extant body of evidence pertaining to the impact of exercise on the treatment of patients diagnosed with VLUs. A comprehensive literature search was executed across multiple databases, encompassing PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar. The methodological rigour was evaluated utilizing the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2) instrument, while the quality of the evidence was appraised via the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) classification system. The relative efficacy of exercise interventions on outcomes related to VLUs, including rates of wound healing, total range of motion in the ankle joint, and adherence rates, was synthesized. Data were consolidated employing fixed-effects models, and the impact of exercise on these outcomes was visually represented through the use of forest plots. The methodological foundation of this investigation comprised four systematic reviews and meta-analyses, each characterized by an intermediate level of methodological rigour and evidence quality. Subsequent analyses revealed that exercise interventions exert a multifaceted and favourable impact on the therapeutic landscape of VLUs. These interventions distinctly contribute to the enhancement of wound healing rates (risk difference 0.17, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.06–0.28) and the extension of ankle range of motion (mean difference [MD] 6.10, 95% CI: 4.61–7.59). Furthermore, Pooled adherence rate was 0.70 (95% CI: 0.20–2.45) with no significant heterogeneity. In conclusion, although existing evidence supports the positive impact of exercise training on VLUs, higher-quality research is still needed to deepen our understanding of its effects and provide more specific guidance for clinical practice.

BackgroundKnee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common disabling joint disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Diet may play a role in the etiology and progression of KOA, but evidence for a causal relationship is limited. We aimed to investigate the causal impact of dietary intake on KOA risk using Mendelian randomization (MR).
MethodsWe used summary-level data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) including dietary intake (n = 335, 394–462, 342), and KOA (n = 403, 124). We selected 6–77 genetic variants as instrumental variables for 18 dietary factors, including processed meat, poultry, beef, oily fish, non-oily fish, pork, lamb, frequency of alcohol intake, alcoholic beverages, tea, coffee, dried fruit, cereals, cheese, bread, cooked vegetables, salad/raw vegetables, and fresh fruit. We performed univariate and multivariate MR analyses to estimate the causal effect of each dietary factor on KOA risk. We also performed some sensitivity analyses to assess the validity of the MR hypothesis.
ResultsWe found that higher coffee intake was associated with increased KOA risk, whereas higher intake of dried fruits, grains, cheese, and oily fish was associated with reduced KOA risk. After multivariate adjustment, we found that coffee and oily fish intake may affect KOA through obesity, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, hypertension, and prolonged standing. Sensitivity analyses did not reveal any evidence of pleiotropy.
ConclusionsOur study provides new causal evidence that dietary intake may influence KOA risk. Specifically, we suggest that increased intake of dried fruits, grains, cheese, and oily fish and decreased coffee intake may be beneficial in preventing and mitigating KOA. further studies are needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and to confirm our findings in different populations.
To investigate whether chronic diseases are associated with higher COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and explore factors that influence COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in patients with chronic diseases.
Vaccine hesitancy has been acknowledged as one of the greatest hazards to public health. However, little information is available about COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among patients with chronic diseases who may be more susceptible to COVID-19 infection, severe disease or death.
From 6 to 9 August 2021, we performed an internet-based cross-sectional survey with 22,954 participants (14.78% participants with chronic diseases). Propensity score matching with 1:1 nearest neighbourhood was used to reduce confounding factors between patients with chronic diseases and the general population. Using a multivariable logistic regression model, the factors impacting COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy were identified among patients with chronic diseases.
Both before and after propensity score matching, patients with chronic diseases had higher COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy than the general population. In addition, self-reported poor health, multiple chronic diseases, lower sociodemographic backgrounds and lower trust in nurses and doctors were associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among patients with chronic diseases.
Patients with chronic diseases were more hesitant about the COVID-19 vaccine. Nurses should focus on patients with chronic diseases with poor health conditions, low socioeconomic backgrounds and low trust in the healthcare system.
Clinical nurses are recommended to not only pay more attention to the health status and sociodemographic characteristics of patients with chronic diseases but also build trust between nurses and patients by improving service levels and professional capabilities in clinical practice.

This study explores the situation of workload, work–family conflict and job burnout among primary health workers in China in the context of COVID-19 and identifies the mediating effect of work–family conflict between workload and job burnout.
Since the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic, primary health workers have been working on the frontline of the epidemic and may experience increasing workload, work–family conflict and job burnout. It is important to focus on the issue of how to alleviate job burnout of primary health workers.
A cross-sectional study (STROBE) was used.
Data were collected from 785 primary health workers in China. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the mediating effect of work–family conflict between workload and job burnout.
18.7%, 10.4% and 39.5% of respondents had high job burnout in the dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment, respectively. 34.6% of the respondents had high or very high workload, and 12.8% of the respondents had high or very high work–family conflict. Results of multiple regression analysis indicated that work–family conflict mediated the relationship between workload and job burnout. Workload (β = .163, CI = .207–.549) and work–family conflict (β = .211, CI = .311–.640) positively influenced job burnout, and workload (β = .428, CI = .375–.508) positively influenced work–family conflict.
The study indicated that primary health workers experienced a high level of job burnout, especially in the personal accomplishment dimension. Furthermore, this study verified the mediating effect of work–family conflict between workload and job burnout.
Some interventions for alleviating workload, work–family conflict and job burnout should be taken, including workplace assistance programmes, family-friendly policies and a well-integrated healthcare system.

Nurses and other primary health workers are health gatekeepers of residents and play a vital role in the healthcare system. Due to the breakout of COVID-19, they have taken more work and are more vulnerable to work overload, work–family conflict and the consequent job burnout. Some interventions should be taken to effectively alleviate their job burnout and improve their health and performance.
This study aims to propose a self-management clusters classification method to determine the self-management ability of elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) associated with diabetes mellitus (DM).
MCI associated with DM is a common chronic disease in old adults. Self-management affects the disease progression of patients to a large extent. However, the comorbidity and patients' self-management ability are heterogeneous.
A cross-sectional study based on cluster analysis is designed in this paper.
The study included 235 participants. The diabetes self-management scale is used to evaluate the self-management ability of patients. SPSS 21.0 was used to analyse the data, including descriptive statistics, agglomerative hierarchical clustering with Ward's method before k-means clustering, k-means clustering analysis, analysis of variance and chi-square test.
Three clusters of self-management styles were classified as follows: Disease neglect type, life oriented type and medical dependence type. Among all participants, the percentages of the three clusters above are 9.78%, 32.77% and 57.45%, respectively. The difference between the six dimensions of each cluster is statistically significant.
This study classified three groups of self-management styles, and each group has its own self-management characteristics. The characteristics of the three clusters may help to provide personalized self-management strategies and delay the disease progression of MCI associated with DM patients.
Typological methods can be used to discover the characteristics of patient clusters and provide personalized care to improve the efficiency of patient self-management to delay the progress of the disease.
In our study, we invited patients and members of the public to participate in the research survey and conducted data collection.
A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to identify the factors related to cancer death anxiety based on available evidence.
This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines.
Seven databases were searched to identify studies on the relationships of cancer death anxiety with demographic characteristics, disease factors and psychosocial factors from inception to May 2023. The Agency for Medical Research and Quality (AHRQ) scale was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. After two researchers independently completed the literature search, data extraction and quality evaluation, meta-analysis was conducted by using RevMan5.3 and Stata 17.0 software.
In total, 52 studies were included in this review. The results revealed that there were positive correlations of death anxiety with female sex, the symptom burden, anxiety levels, depression levels, fear of recurrence, attachment avoidance, psychological distress, resignation and confrontation coping. Death anxiety was negatively correlated with age, education level, ability to perform daily activities, self-esteem, spiritual well-being, sense of meaning in life, resilience, quality of life, social support and religious beliefs.
Our results can inform the design of interventions to address death anxiety and improve the overall quality of life of cancer patients. Healthcare professionals should promptly identify and focus on death anxiety in high-risk populations of cancer patients.
Cancer patients commonly experience death anxiety, and this anxiety has a nonnegligible impact on patients' mental health and overall quality of life. This study can inform the development of interventions by clinical healthcare professionals.
This was a meta-analysis based on data from previous studies.
We aimed to explore the efficacy of maple leaf-shaped flap in the repair of perianal circular skin defect. This study is a retrospective review of patients with perianal circular skin defect after skin tumour resection and repaired with maple leaf-shaped flap. Patients included in this study were admitted in our department between January 2010 and January 2023. A standardized data collection template was used to collect related variables. The design and surgical procedures of maple leaf-shaped flap are carefully described in this study. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) was applied to assist wound healing postoperatively. Twenty-seven patients were included in this study. The average wound size after tumour resection measured 4 × 5 cm2–10 × 10 cm2. The circular skin defect was repaired by maple leaf-shaped flap, and NPWT was used after surgery. Twenty-five patients achieved primary wound healing and flaps were well-survived. Slight infection occurred in two patients, and both were cured after dressing change. During the follow-up period of 6–24 months, no tumour recurrence occurred. The perianal morphology can be well-restored by maple leaf-shaped flap, and the defecation control function of anus was not impaired. The application of maple leaf-shaped flap and NPWT is a promising way in the repair of perianal circular skin defect with little complication and satisfying outcomes.
